Patterns 

During the first two weeks of the new term, Junior Infants were learning about shapes. we completed the two weeks by revisiting patterns. The children created patterns using a variety of resources, copying patterns and also creating their own.

Aistear in Action 

For January, our topic is Houses and Homes. During Aistear the children were creating various types of homes together.

November 2023-

3d Shapes

In the final week of November we learnt about 3d shapes. We went on a 3d shape hunt looking out for cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres! 

Science Week 2023

We carried out a number of experiments indoors and outdoors. Here are two recorded experiments. In pairs, the children explored classroom objects with magnets. Outside we observed an explosive experiment involving Mentos and diet coke! 

November 2023:

Fine Motor Skills- The children worked together to create a ‘road’ that meandered around the classroom. Some decided to use the blocks to see how wide the classroom was!

Signs of Autumn

We took a walk around the school looking for signs of Autumn using our tick sheets.

A Visiting Artist

The children experienced a creative workshop organised by Meath County Council. Children’s author and illustrator Tatyana Feeney  guided the kids in a Monster Doodle Workshop. Tatyana started the workshop by reading one of her books and then led a creative activity.

October ’23: Maths

During October, the children focused on size, length, height, width and weight. This activity the senior infants were given challenge sheets to determine which sets of objects were heavier and lighter.

Our School Office! 

Towards the end of September, our topic was ‘Our School’. Our role play area was a school office and part of this topic we interviewed our school secretary Bernie!

Fine Motor Skill Activities
Every morning, the children start the day with fine motor skill activities.

Early Literacy/ Music 

The children took part in a listening walk outdoors around the school. They used mallets to listen to and imitate familiar sounds in the immediate environment from varying sources.

Looking into the Summer! 

Junior and Senior Infants created art work depicting their summer adventures. 

Wellbeing Week: 

During Wellbeing Week, the children engaged in some relaxation and breathing outdoors with the lovely Dearbhla Grall, Recharge Yoga. 

Topic- Airport

During the month of June, the topic in Junior and Senior Infants was the Airport. To complete the topic, the children ‘took a flight’. They went to the check in desk, went through security, got on their flight, watched some inflight entertainment while enjoying some light refreshments!

Pride of Place: May 2023

Junior and Senior Infants went on a wild flower hunt. We counted how many daises, dandelions and clovers were in small areas in the grass. After that we helped out the dandelions by blowing the seeds

As part of our topic, The Emergency Services, we received a visit from Garda Gerry. Garda Gerry let us try on the Garda hat. He passed around the handcuffs to everyone. We gave us colouring pages to colour. He kindly gifted us Garda bags. We waved him off with the sirens blaring!!

When we returned in April after the Easter Holidays we began learning about a new topic, The Emergency Services. In our art lesson, the children mixed red and yellow to create a fiery background. They created a fire engine and glued it to the page.

March 2023 

We had an impromptu St Patrick’s Day Parade during Aistear. The children created flags and hats, singing ‘Lá le Pádraig atá ann.’

Pancake Tuesday/      Shrove Tuesday 

In the morning, the children completed a cutting and sticking activity, pasting various toppings on their pancake pictures. In the afternoon, the children decorated their pancakes with toppings (honey, marshmallows, sprinkles) and ate them before home time. We chatted a little about what happens in other countries on Pancake Tuesday. 

Happy Valentines Day!! 

February 2023

During this month we focused on the storybook Handa’s Surprise and Kenya, Africa. To complete the topic, the children tasted some fruit. After that we made smoothies and tasted those also. Yum!

December 2022:               3D shapes 

This month we were learning about 3d shapes: cuboids, cubes, cylinders and spheres. We went on shape hunts in school and at home. We discovered that shapes are everywhere!! We also made our own 3d shapes using plasticine and sticks.

Fine Motor Skills

Every morning, upon arriving to school, Junior and Senior Infants engage in ‘funky fingers’ activities. It gives them an opportunity to revisit a concept previously covered, practise their writing and/or scissor cutting skills while focusing on the current topic!

During Science Week, Junior and Senior Infants completed a number of science experiments, with some explosive results!!  

Halloween 2022

For Halloween, we dressed up in superheroes, fairies, ninja’s and clowns! We celebrated Halloween with a parade outside.

After reading the storybook, The Dot, the class created their own ‘dot’ painting. ‘You can beautiful art with just DOTS!

The Colour Monster

In September, Senior Infants read the story, The Colour Monster. One day, Colour Monster wakes up with his emotions are all over the place; he feels angry, happy, calm, sad and scared all at once! To help him, a little girl shows him what each feeling means through colour. After reading the story, Senior Infants created their own colour monsters.

Maths – 12th May 2022

Today in Maths, we were revising patterns.

The children created their own patterns using a variety of resources. 

The Zoo

With the introduction of our new topic, The Zoo, the children busied themselves making animals masks for the role play area.

The Garden Centre – April 2022

During the topic of the Garden Centre, we went on a mini beast hunt around the school

Playtime Concert!

During playtime, the children decided to put on a show. They created tickets, invited people to come along, rehearsed and put on a show! Great Entertainment!    

Garden Centre – March 2022

During the month of March, our topic was the Garden Centre. During this time the children planted seeds. In these pictures, the children planted grass seeds. First decorating the cups, placing the soil and seeds on top and finally watering them. They happily took them home before the Easter Holidays. 

Aistear

During Aistear the children created Spring art. 

Creating cherry blossom using crepe paper and/or paint. The children also created pictures of flowers using black sugar paper and pastels, after learning about the different parts of a flower. 

World Book Day 2022

The pupils from Junior and Senior Infants dressed up as characters from their favourite books to celebrate World Book Day and the Scholastic Book Fair visiting our school.

Spring 2022

Spring has definitely sprung is our Junior and Senior Infants Classroom. 

The children made lambs, chicks and daffodils to brighten up our corridor.

SESE – Winter Theme 

During the month of December 2021 the students in Junior and Senior infants created pieces of art based on the SESE topic of Winter. 

They created:

  1. Evergreen trees using chalk on black paper;
  2. Designed and decorated mittens;
  3. Dressed a bear for Winter using fabric;
  4. Created their own advent wreaths.

Shape Hunt

This week (29/11/2021) we were learning about 3D shapes. We went on a shape hunt around the school, with our clip boards and tick sheets on the look out for cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders and cones. 

We also investigated shapes and their properties, to discover shapes that roll and shapes that cannot roll!  

Happy Face Biscuits

For the month of November we were learning about procedural writing in Literacy.

We listed the ingredients and followed the steps to make ‘Happy Face Biscuits!’ Yum!

Nature Walk

We all enjoyed a nature walk around the school today, looking for signs of autumn. Look at all the lovely leaves we found!

School Year 2020 – 2021

STEM projects:

Here in Junior and Senior Infants we are so creative and love a challenge.

We were tasked with a number of stem projects such as designing robots, creating animal enclosures, writing our names in 3D and building bridges. We loved doing all of them!

Oíche Shamhna:

Bhí an ghrian ag taitneamh agus bheartaigh muid dul amach chun Gaeilge a dhéanamh. Bhíomar sona sásta agus thaitin an lá go mór linn. Halloween: The sun was shining so we decided to go outside to do Irish. We were really happy and enjoyed the day! 

Maths Week October 2020:

We love to play and learn maths – so we decided to do both for Maths Week!

We played with jigsaws, explored counting books and played our favourite maths game ‘Reach for the Stars’ 

Science Week 2020/21:

Junior and Senior Infants were busy doing a Skittles Experiment for Science Week! 

We learned that the shells of skittles are made of sugar. 

When the sugar was put in warm water, it dissolved. 

This caused the colours to mix and create new colours. We had lots of fun 🙂
